| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description An American couple retires early, packs their belongings in large trash containers and makes Aegina, a small Greek island, their home. Their mission is to slow their stressed out lives to a crawl. They fiercely desire to be completely open to the hidden joys of sun, sea and islander.
The plan is to live at the hub of life's frantically spinning wheel of activity and simply observe all. Ironically, they find themselves in a whirlwind of present and past events of the extraordinary island. They interact on all sides with women pirates, Nazi troops, Moslem rulers, taverna pals, kiosk owners, ouzo bottles, sailor dances and the pure joy that transcends past and present.
"Madness" is an extraordinary memoir. It is not the story of dumb Americans becoming Greeks, although the Mayor of Aegina compared the author to Kazantzakis. It is not a travelogue, even though the author writes as perceptively as St. Exupery. That comparison started when Don DePaul's CATERFLY was compared to the LITTLE PRINCE.
This book is a bare knuckled brawl to find the meaning of life. It is a tribute to people everywhere who struggle heroically to seize transcendence in a dangerous and stressful world. On Aegina the author discovers unexpectedly that the elusive joy he has been seeking is the true treasure of his little island and that bliss often is hiding in the commonplace and "insignificant" that we trip over.
Don DePaul is a inspirational writer. He has published in America, Australia, Israel and Great Britain. His perceptions have been sharpened by his two 100 day solo treks across India, work in the Netherlands and Greece. A lust for travel took him into thirty countries; he has been everywhere from the sewers of Paris to the Himalayan caves.
This author is a master story teller who is everywhere involved in the island tales he tells; and the reader is challenged to dive into the entertaining stories and join him, his wife and island friends in their dance of joyful madness.
