Excerpt: ... acquaint us, were neither Turks nor Christians* but raphifi, i. e. hereticks, and subjects to the emir Kadir, the most powerful prince among the Druses, and who farms several villages from the Palcha of Seyde. Near this place we found a cool spring, which, falling from the rocks into a large bason, after watering the valley, joins a rivulet, and discharges itself into the river Letane. Soon after we came into a valley full of gardens and cascades, and covered every where with a lively verdure. We next reached the river Letane, which is said to have its source not far from Balbec. It waters the valley of Bucca, and afterwards discharges itself into the river Cajsimtr, which we had crossed between Tyre and Sidon; and, as I before observed, is supposed to be the Eleutberus of the ancients. From" the valley of Bucca we turned off to the right, taking our way through the mountains, as the safest to avoid the Arabian banditti. Two hours farther we saw on our left hand another village called Rifia, with a castle on an eminence, and in which an emir of the Druses resides. A little lower is another village called Darlachnab, the inhabitants of which are very industrious in cultivating silk; and accordingly we observed very large plantations of mulberry trees. The country being every where mountainous, and the roads generally very bad, we could not travel far in a day; but were surprized at the ruins of a large lonely church, situated on our left hand: A little on our right lay a village called Ratchli. The next day we saw in a plain on our left hand a village called Japhour; and a little further another called Cboegh. Here they were plowing with oxen; a sight not common in this country. On our right hand was a sightly town called Chatana, entirely surrounded with gardens...
