Better to choose one VI destination and get specific guide. August 26, 2010 Peregrinn I hoped this would be useful as I prepared to travel to St. John in the US Virgin Islands. Because I hoped to take a boat trip through the British Virgin Islands, I wanted to know more about them as well. I did not feel that I really got much useful information from this book, since it covers so many sites that each one gets only a cursory review. I wish I had just gotten a guide to St. John.
Fodor's: Always a Good Choice July 11, 2010 Robert R. Fisher (Tallahassee, FL) I have used Fodors Travel Guides for travel to new places several times and have never been disappointed. The guide for the US Virgin Islands comes in especially handy when selecting dining and points of interest since we were on package that included lodging.
Fodor's has a great listing of the "budget" places to eat and I highly recommend trying out several. While the food tends to be very good at places like Vie's on St. Johns, these budget places give you tons of local flavor you won't get at the upscale restaurants. And by local flavor, I mean just about anything - including the ubiquitous chickens. We had been hiking so we didn't mind the "extras."
The guide also has the very handy information on where credit cards are accepted. This can save a lot of time and trouble. If you are going to the VI, this is a very good companion.
Up to date July 1, 2010 Tell It Like It Is (good ole USA) Up to date, well written, loaded with useful information and maps. Recommended, especially for first time visitors to the BVI or USVI. Well worth the money. Your trip is going to cost thousands. Spring for the few dollars to buy this book and plan your trip before you even leave home.
General overview of a popular area June 22, 2010 TCL (Guilford, CT USA) This is a beautiful compact guide to a very popular area. As the title says, it is a guide to a very large area and so in-depth local detail, island by island, activity by activity comparisons cannot and should not be expected. That being said, this little guide is not short on useful information.
This guide is generously illustrated with full colour photos and maps of areas and activities of interest and serves as an excellent primary research and guide enabling the vacation planner to easily sort through the wealth of information available both online and in print. The most popular islands have their own section: St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix, Tortola, Virgin Gorda , while the last paragraph is dedicated to the "other British Virgin Islands". There is of course the requisite introductory chapter of what, when, and where and a logistics chapter listing relevant phone numbers, airlines, further research and such.
In typical Fodor's style, the hotel and restaurant listings are very middle-of-the-road, catering to the group traveler who just wants to know a little more about the area or one that is looking to revisit the area in the future. The prices are middle to middle-high and there is nothing off the beaten path or too rough (which falls more in the Lonely Planet category).
This is an excellent research tool for vacation planners, and for those who just want to know a little more about the Virgin Islands as a general category. More detailed information on each activity and on each island can be found in dedicated books, websites and tourist offices but this little guide helps immensely in sorting through all that is out there.
It is important to note that this guide is printed by Edition # (22) instead of by year compared to other city specific guides in the same series.
More than a primer! April 30, 2010 Impostazione (New York City Area) This book is for the active road, so a good place for it to be is in your suitcase, handbag, rental car and definitely in whichever town or on whatever island you find yourself. It is so handy because it gives you an overview of each town, its culture, its behavioral expectations, modes of transportation, and various popular things to do with information on why that place is famous for that activity - with pretty pictures and readable text unlike some famous travel guides.
So, everything is here, even a glossary BUT the maps are small and generalized so bring your own maps!
