| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description One of the greatest engineering feats ever, the Panama Canal is becoming one of the world's most popular cruise itineraries. Ports of call span the Caribbean and the Mexican Riviera, but the highlight of the cruise is the eight-hour transit of the Canal in which six massive locks raise and lower the ship 85 feet. Read about the monumental construction of the Canal as well as the history, culture, flora and fauna of this tropical region. Detail provided on popular ports, from Florida to California. Over 400 maps and photos most in color. Includes giant color fold out map of Panama Canal

Nice and concise current Info February 12, 2010 Eric Boysen (Boulder, CO) I bought this to prepare for a Panama Canal Cruise. If you want detailed historical info, read PANAMA FEVER, available at Amazon. However, this guide to the cruise and ports gives an excellent concise history of the French and American efforts to build the canal and make the book that much more valuable.
Panama Canal By Cruise Ship review December 19, 2009 S. B. Chelemer (Mount Laurel, NJ) This book is really a travelog, not a guide. I was looking for opinions on excursions, what each was like, which were bargains, ripoffs, tourist traps, etc. This was basically a book on the natural history of different places. A major disappointment for what I was looking for.
Very good guide October 31, 2009 Brandywine (Santa Rosa, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I just returned from a Panama Canal cruise and took this book along, using it every step of the way. At each port I consulted this guide for quick information on history and highlights. Also contains in-depth history on the building of the canal and everything you want to know about it. Also, good map/schematic of the canal itself in pullout format. Highly recommended.
Covered with old library markings and Missing "Large Color Map" October 21, 2009 B (B) Purchased this book for a cruise I was taking. Mildly disappointed that the book was marking Library property all over including the card pocket. But very unhappy that the Large Color map of the area was missing (this was the main reason I choose this book).
Anne Vipond Fan September 17, 2009 Kenneth J. Horton (Ocean Isle Beach, NC, USA) Anne Vipond has taken us to Alaska, Hawaii and through the Panama Canal with her guides. Her books are well written with regional history, cruise tips, and great information on ports. Frankly, we have not found other tour guides nearly as valuable. She will again be in our suitcase when we cruise the Mediterranean in the fall of 2010.
