Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Part of National Geographic's Destination Series, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park map is really a full-color folded travel map and a brief guidebook bound together. The folded map shows the park in the trademark National Geographic style and outlines suggested hikes and locates landmarks and places of interest. It's printed on waterproof paper. On the reverse are numerous color photos and brief profiles of the area's history, flora and fauna, geology, weather, and also tips on traveling responsibly. In addition, there's information about how to spend your time best based on the length of your stay. The guidebook includes driving distances, a regional map, and an index to trails in the park.

This map looks like (but isn't) another entry in National Geographic's Trails Illustrated Series. Like those maps, it has a map of the park, some miscellaneous park information about campgrounds and permits, and some random photographs of the park. (There is a Trails Illustrated map for the Smokies, and I *do* recommend that one.)

The map itself is the the same size as the other maps, and folds out of the booklet. It's halfway between the National Park Service's park map and a shaded topographical map. It shows the roads, trails, waterfalls, shelters, campgrounds and other facilities--just like the NPS map. It also has some short text on various topics, like wildlife, air quality, and weather.

Like a shaded topo, it gives you a sense of the topography as if viewed from the air. But it's not a topo, and there are no elevations on it. There is also no mileage information on the trails. In short: if you wanted to use this map for hiking, you wouldn't know how long your hike is, how much elevation it covers. This makes it useless for hiking.

It might be useful for some other purpose, but I can't figure out what purpose that is. It has a road map, but so does the NPS map or a highway map. It shows facilities, but so does the NPS map. The text doesn't give enough information to help you plan a visit, but it's mildly informative.

The production values are excellent, and it certainly looks beautiful. But it's not very useful for any purpose that I can think of. The NPS map is free.
