Product Description From the bestselling author of The Sex Lives of Cannibals, the laugh-out-loud true story of his years on the islands of Vanuatu and Fiji, among cannibals, volcanoes . . . and the world’s best narcotics.
With The Sex Lives of Cannibals, Maarten Troost established himself as one of the most engaging and original travel writers around. Getting Stoned with Savages again reveals his wry wit and infectious joy of discovery in a side-splittingly funny account of life in the farthest reaches of the world. After two grueling years on the island of Tarawa, battling feral dogs, machete-wielding neighbors, and a lack of beer on a daily basis, Maarten Troost was in no hurry to return to the South Pacific. But as time went on, he realized he felt remarkably out of place among the trappings of twenty-first-century America. When he found himself holding down a job—one that might possibly lead to a career—he knew it was time for he and his wife, Sylvia, to repack their bags and set off for parts unknown. Getting Stoned with Savages tells the hilarious story of Troost’s time on Vanuatu—a rugged cluster of islands where the natives gorge themselves on kava and are still known to “eat the man.” Falling into one amusing misadventure after another, Troost struggles against typhoons, earthquakes, and giant centipedes and soon finds himself swept up in the laid-back, clothing-optional lifestyle of the islanders. When Sylvia gets pregnant, they decamp for slightly-more-civilized Fiji, a fallen paradise where the local chiefs can be found watching rugby in the house next door. And as they contend with new parenthood in a country rife with prostitutes and government coups, their son begins to take quite naturally to island living—in complete contrast to his dad.

I WAS THERE GETTING STONED WITH THEM ! August 15, 2010 D. H. Bowe (Houston Texas) I Have read all of this author's books and LOVE them all, but secretly this one is my fave. Great descriptions of the peoples and places in the fijian island chain. Highly recommended.
Hilarious book June 3, 2010 Neil D SH This is a hilarious book. I enjoyed going through the descriptions of the areas Troost lived in while in the Pacific Islands. This book is not only entertaining, buy also educational - just a fun read. Troost describes this very down-to-earth journey of his travels in such a way that you feel you are his co-traveller. He has added comedy, drama, and lots and lots of kava drinking. Reading this book was a pleasant way to pass the time while visiting the Pacific islands and relaxing on its beautiful beaches. I have enjoyed this book and would recommend this book as a fun read.
Getting Stoned with Savages April 2, 2010 Nicole Wilson, Author of "Undressing Chickens" and "The Callie Gang". (Seattle, Wash., USA) After reading "Sex life of Cannibals" I couldn't wait to read "Getting stoned with savages".
It is written in a very simple and easy way and always right to the point-which usually leaves me with a huge grin on my face.It is highly entertaining and full of humor.
I enjoy the detailed descriptions of the occurring events and find it easy to relate to the problems the writer and his wife encounter on their trips to places unknown to them.
You could call the book a travel-log and follow the writer to all the places he visits and get to know all the people he meets, laugh about his misadventures and the unconventional ways he deals with any and all problems. Troost paints a vivid picture of the South Pacific Islands and the local Islanders he encounters on his travels.
The ending of the book leaves you wondering if he indeed found the paradise he is obviously searching for, in one way or another...
A fun read.

I'd pay good money to travel with Troost November 1, 2009 A. Bryant Betsill (Fayetteville, Ga.) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I read Troost first book, Sex Lives of the Cannibals, twice. I read Getting Stoned three times. I have read several of the user reviews and will add Amen, to what they write. This is not a typical travel guide, more like a guide to living and putting up with the locals, who have no idea what a hot shower means to an American. But the book is quite fun to read. Again and again. In fact, I think I'll put on the night table right now.
