Product Description
Elizabeth "Betts" McGee loved those lazy afternoons on pristine Bulls Island in the Carolina Lowcountry. But everything came crashing down when tragic fateâcoupled with nasty rumor and innuendoâended her engagement to Charleston golden boy J.D. Langley of the fabulously wealthy (and fabulously snooty) Langley clan. Betts left soon after, and she hasn't been back in nearly twenty years. Successfully reinventing herself in New York City, Betts is now a top banking executive and heading up the most important project of her career, but it'll transform the untouched island she loved in her youth into something unrecognizable. And it's forcing her to return to the bosom of her estranged family, where she may not be welcomed with open arms. Worse still, it's uniting her with ex-flame J.D., who's changed . . . but perhaps not enough. And then there's that crazy alligator . . .

Not as good as her others March 9, 2010 queenreneemarie (Maryland, USA) After having read all of D.B.F.'s books, I have to say that this one is probably my least favorite. I enjoy the author's sense of humor and found most of the characters likeable. I liked the plot of this story for the most part, even though some of it towards the end was hard to believe, however I could not stand Betts McGee, the protagonist. I could not understand her rationale in the choices that she made and I found her very irritating and snobby, which made me hurry through the book because I found Betts so distasteful and just wanted to be done with her.
The other problem I have, not just with this book, is that *almost* all of D.B.F.'s novels follow too similar a pattern: single 40-ish woman with one or two children gets tired of life in the Big Apple, so returns home to South Carolina to be comforted by either A.) a wise mother-figure or B.) a saintly best friend. While there, protagonist is pursued by two different men, and hi-jinks ensue. It makes me wonder if the Low Country is peopled entirely with ex New Yorkers.
More hit than miss... February 25, 2010 Cynthia K. Robertson (beverly, new jersey USA) I became a big fan of Dorothea Benton Frank after reading Plantation. Unfortunately, some of her more recent books have been hit or miss. I'm happy to report that I thoroughly enjoyed Bulls Island. However, while reading Bulls Island, you have to believe the impossible--that the State of South Carolina would allow Bulls Island (an island in the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge) to be developed.
Betts McGhee is an executive with a private equity company in New York City. The Charleston-native fled the Holy City 19 years ago when the family of her fiancé, J.D. Langley, caused a life-altering tragedy to occur. McGhee's company has decided to help develop Bulls Island along with a local builder, and they tap McGhee to oversee the project. But after cutting off almost all contact with anyone from Charleston, she is now forced to return to Charleston and confront her ghosts. Her presence there will also uncover secrets that she's kept hidden for 19 years. Not only must McGhee deal with these personal issues, but she also has a host of professional obstacles as well (protesters, sabotage at the worksite, and a killer alligator). These are a lot of balls for McGhee to juggle and it's questionable whether they all will come crashing down around her.
Although Bulls Island is definitely a stretch at times, I excuse Frank for this because it's such a treat to read about the low country of South Carolina. It was even better for me, as I read Bulls Island while on vacation here. Perhaps only Pat Conroy writes more lovingly of this area. Also, Frank can be quite funny at times, like when she performs "the Mattress Mambo Marathon" with a new "Eyetalian" friend.
Frank's books are fun and entertaining. What more can you want?
Dorothea Benton Frank fan February 25, 2010 K. Balsamo (Newton, KS) Another wonderful book to read. Although I have never had the pleasure to
visit South Carolina, Dorothea's books, like Bull's Island, that you have been
there. And, her stories are always captivating. This particular story is charming and enjoyable. If you have read her previous books, I know you will want this one too. If you have never read any of her books, this one will induce you to become a fan.
LOVE IT!! One of my favorites!!! February 17, 2010 Stephanie Day Lockwood (Indian Trail, NC) What a great book!! I have read every one of Frank's books. Plantation was my favorite and now this one is tied!! Great detail in the settings in SC. Story keeps you reading!! GREAT BOOK!
Lots of good Lowcountry and humanity February 11, 2010 Sonia D. Cook (Downingtown, pa) I loved the way that Betts drives the whole package of a new Yankee having never lost her love for her roots or her family or past, despite the horrible tragedy of her engagement.
The local color abounds with the allusions to the high end resorts of Kiawah and the surroundings. Then the other scenes of J D's little fishing excursion wanted me to head right down Johns Island and cast my line.
As a woman, hearing this lady get dressed and doing her hair that time of year was all I needed to get me some Lowcountry time in the future. The loyalty of Sela, which is so refreshing, the ability to find the levity in every situation. and OMG, the build up between JD and Betts is addictive. Good job, Dorothea.
