Product Description
Dorothea Benton Frank returns to the enchanted landscape of South Carolina's Lowcountry made famous in her beloved New York Times bestseller Sullivans Island to tell the story of the next generation of Hamiltons and Hayes. Return to Sullivans Island Whether you were away from the Lowcountry for a week or for years, it was impossible to remember how gorgeous it was. It never changed and everyone depended on that. Newly graduated from college and an aspiring writer, Beth Hayes craves independence and has a world to conquer. But her notions of travel, graduate study, and writing the great American novel will have to be postponed. With her mother, Susan, leaving to fulfill her own dreams in Paris and her Aunt Maggie, Uncle Grant, and stepfather, Simon, moving to California, Beth is elected by her elders to house-sit the Island Gamble. Surrounded by the shimmering blue waters of the Atlantic, the white clapboards, silver tin roof, and confessional porch have seen and heard the stories of generations of Hamiltons. But will the ghosts of the Island Gamble be watching over Beth? Buoyed by sentimental memories of growing up on this tiny sandbar that seems to be untouched by time, Beth vows to give herself over to the Lowcountry force and discover the wisdom it holds. She will rest, rejuvenate, and then reenter the outside world. Just as she vows she will never give into the delusional world of white picket fences, minivans, and eternal love, she meets Max Mitchell. And all her convictions and plans begin to unravel with lightning speed. There is so much about life and her family's past that she does not know. Her ignorance and naivetÉ nearly cost her both her inheritance and her family's respect. But Beth finds unexpected friends to help her through the disaster she faces: her wise and charming Aunt Sophie; Cecily Singleton, the granddaughter of Livvie Singleton; and Woody Morrison, the solid young investment banker. This wonderful ensemble of characters could be your own family, but watch what unfolds as they succumb to the island's spell. If everything happens for a reason, then Beth's return to Sullivans Island teaches her that betrayal and tragedy are most easily handled when you surround yourself with loyal family and friends in a magical place that loves you so much that it wants to claim you as its own.

Not just a beach read January 21, 2010 Soaping Diva (Flora, IL United States) I love all of Ms Frank's books. She captures the feel of the lowlands, the beach, and entire region.
This book was a tad different from her others, a little supernatural thrown in, but again this is common in that region of the country.
Of course there is romance, but this one has a bit more suspense/mystery than some of her other books.
I loved it, can't wait for her next book.
She always delivers December 30, 2009 Linda Rae Williams (Central Maryland, United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Dorothea Benton Frank always delivers a delightful story. Her Southern women are true, strong, a little quirky and open to suggestion. I buy her books in hardback as soon as they are published; there is no way I could wait for a paperbook version.
In this book, a young woman finds her own place in the world in a wonderful, believable and interesting way. It reminded me strongly of the women I know who are in their twenties and thirties today and had some lessons for them to learn. These books never quite follow the path you think they might, but they reach a conclusion that makes you smile. The characters unfold. The story unfolds. You are just along for the ride, wrapped in a world Dot Frank creates, not quite the one you live in every day.
Disappointed December 17, 2009 EZReader (New Jersey) I have loved all of the "Low Country" stories that I have read until now. I was terribly disappointed. All the other books I have read had a strong sense of community and friendship. A strong group of friends helping someone in trouble.
I'm still plowing my way through this book, but I'd like to give that ridiculously naive Beth a shake.
Mediocre at best December 16, 2009 Jean Kelso (Wisconsin) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Young Beth Hayes, newly graduated from college, has dreams of graduate school and a career in writing. Her family has other plans for her, to house sit the family home, Island Gamble, on Sullivan's Island, South Carolina while her mother is in France and the rest of the family in California. Obediently, Beth moves in and revisits memories of family past while carving out a place for herself with new jobs as a writer for the local paper and hostess at a restaurant. While working on her first assignment of reporting on new construction and its impact on local residents, Beth meets Max Mitchell, a real estate developer. It was here that I wanted to throw the book across the room as Beth begins developing this great "love" affair with a very shallow man and the financial consequences that follow. With youth on her side, I was still unbelieving that a young woman could be so naïve and found book to be disappointing when written by an author that I normally enjoy.
Such a disappointment November 13, 2009 Jane Doe (Florida) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Too much "golly geewiz" dialogue. Frustratingly predictable plot. Too many authors coasting on their previous successes for monetary gain. Very disrespectful to their readers.
