Product Description
A charming, illustrated celebration of puttering, doodling, daydreaming, and settling down after years on the road. Following a lifetime of trekking across the globe, Vivian Swift racked up twenty-three temporary addresses in twenty years, finally dropped her well-worn futon mattress and rucksack in a small town on the edge of the Long Island Sound. She spent the next decade quietly taking stock of her life, her immediate surroundings, and, finally, what it means to call a place a home. The result is When Wanderers Cease to Roam. Filled with watercolors of beautiful local landscapes, seasonal activities, and small, overlooked pleasures of easy living, each chapter chronicles, month by month, the beautifully mundane perks of remaining at home—from curious notices in the local paper to the variations of autumnal clouds. At once gorgeously rendered and wholly original, this delightful and masterfully observed year of staying put shows us how the details of travel and the details of our lives remain with us—how they can nurture and sustain us, and how the past and the present become, in the end, intertwined.

Beautiful, Creative and Heartwarming March 5, 2010 Louise Hartsock From the charming artwork to the on-going narrative of Swift's life and travels this book will delight and entertain you. Read it from beginning to end first, and then pick it up throughout the year over and over, month after month, to enjoy the drawings and the tidbits of life.
A Book about the delights of every day February 24, 2010 A. Daley (Olympia, Washington United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A friend gave me a copy of Vivian Swift's wonderful book as an "early retirement present". I then spent the next few days (and I am still not retired) pouring over the beautiful watercolors and hand-printed text about the small and enjoyable things in our lives...teacups, tabby cats, interesting townspeople, sunsets, snowstorms, and the many colors of mud. Now I am enjoying the slower pace of re-reading. You can open to any page and discover beauty, wit and even wisdom. This is a wonderful book to enjoy on a rainy afternoon, a sunny morning, a wintry evening...anytime at all.
Truly a treasure. February 6, 2010 Emily J. Marlin (New york State Southern Tier) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This beautiful book has it all: art, wisdom, humor and originality. It delights me all year as I reach each month's chapter in that month (after reading it straight through the first time). It also has been the perfect gift book for many friends who treasure it as much as I do. A lovely book that warms the heart.
When Wanderers Cease to Roam January 30, 2010 K. Fowle (Narragansett, RI) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is an absolutely charming memoir accompanied by even more charming watercolors. Vivian Swift looks back on a youth of traveling juxtaposed with affectionate observations of her village on Long Island Sound. Presented in 12 chapters to cover a year of musings - read it through, then leave it out to appreciate each month again as your year unfolds.
Little Bites January 17, 2010 Suzanne Allen (Memphis, TN USA) It may not be fair to call these comments a "review." I started enjoying this book in early January - a good time to begin as "When Wanderers Cease to Roam" is a journal which begins in January. I flipped through the January section quickly, then started over to spend more time on each little entry or watercolor sketch. I decided to stay in the January section throughout the month and to take each month in turn. This means that I won't finish the book until the end of the year, but I'm looking forward to what each month will have to offer. My January favorites (as of today): (1) the sketch of the lost mittens and (2) "Learn how to draw a tree. Now is the best time to see what a tree REALLY looks like. Draw one a day."
