Product Description The "big" island that the island chain is named for, Hawaii. It is more than twice the size of all the other Hawaiian islands put together, and has the two tallest mountains (volcanoes) of any. And this is the guidebook to explore it with: it covers the length and breadth of the island, from the sun-drenched Kona and Kohala coasts on the west side of the island to Hilo and the breathtaking Hamakua Coast on the other side, from the Kawaihae Coast and the Pololu Valley at the northern tip to the lava flows in the stark landscape of Kau farther south. The author explored this island mile by mile, and included it all in this book: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Saddle Road that leads to the 13,796-foot summit of Mauna Kea, the sacred Pu'uhonau O Honaunau National Historical Park, Mauna Loa, Hapuna Beach, Waipio Valley, myriad waterfalls and swimming holes, macadamia plantations, orchid and anthurium gardens. This is not just a guidebook; it is THE guidebook to the "Big Island." Comes complete with 12 maps, Hawaiian glossary, features on Hawaiian flowers, fish, seashells and leis, and over 500 practical information listings for accommodations, restaurants, events, tours, beaches, campgrounds, hiking trails, water sports, golf courses, etc. Also hundreds of web addresses.

OK General Guide. Not enough detail. November 8, 2007 biker_dan (Carlsbad, CA USA) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
The guide is far too general to help you make informed decisions. Stopped carrying it after two days on the Big Island. Never even read it on Maui. There are better guides out there.
A refreshingly good, clean guidebook June 22, 2007 John Goode (Portland, OR) 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is an excellent guidebook to the Big Island, which my family and I used extensively during our recent vacation there. There was so much good, accurate information packed between its covers, that we couldn't go wrong. Everything we needed was there, current and direct, and extremely well organized. There were descriptions and directions to even the remotest beaches on the island. We also hiked some of the trails described in it in the Volcanoes National Park, and found the information on length and difficulty level to be accurate to a fault. In an era when all the guidebooks out there are trying to contort themselves into "hidden" and "revealed," with kids and without kids, one-eyed and two-eyed, it's refreshing to find a good, clean, forthright guidebook such as this. I applaud the authors.
Terrific ! A joy to use May 6, 2007 Fred Michael (Minneapolis, MN USA) 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
Yes! Yes! Yes! This is the guidebook to get for the Big Island. This is how guidebooks ought to be. We had earlier used The Complete Oahu Guidebook from the same series and were thrilled with it--great format, great, user-friendly design, great cross-referencing, great information, nothing terribly opinionated-- it's just like getting on your laptop and clicking on those links, and voila! the information is all there, instantly, at your fingertips. We don't generally get excited about guidebooks, but these little guides are a real discovery. All we needed to soak up and discover Hawaii's Big Island was this handy little volume, our rental car, and a topographic map (yes, we admit we shelled out for a University of Hawaii topographic map, even though this guide has good area and local maps pinpointing all the places of interest). We found all the major attractions and out-of-the-way places, just as described in the guidebook. Everything was accurate, spot on, well-researched, current. and the book was a real joy to use. We recommend it without reservation to anyone heading to the Big Island. Great job folks!
