Amazon.com Review When Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert of Green Gables, Prince Edward Island, send for a boy orphan to help them out at the farm, they are in no way prepared for the error that will change their lives. The mistake takes the shape of Anne Shirley, a redheaded 11-year-old girl who can talk anyone under the table. Fortunately, her sunny nature and quirky imagination quickly win over her reluctant foster parents. Anne's feisty spirit soon draws many friends--and much trouble--her way. Not a day goes by without some melodramatic new episode in the tragicomedy of her life. Early on, Anne declares her eternal antipathy for Gilbert Blythe, a classmate who commits the ultimate sin of mocking her hair color. Later, she accidentally dyes that same cursed hair green. Another time, in her haste to impress a new neighbor, she bakes a cake with liniment instead of vanilla. Lucy Maud Montgomery's series of books about Anne have remained classics since the early 20th century. Her portrayal of this feminine yet independent spirit has given generations of girls a strong female role model, while offering a taste of another, milder time in history. This lovely boxed gift collection comprises Anne of Green Gables, Anne of the Island, Anne of Avonlea, Anne of Windy Poplars, Anne's House of Dreams, Anne of Ingleside, Rainbow Valley, and Rilla of Ingleside. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

The Complete Anne of Green Gables Boxed Set August 31, 2010 NTru (USA) I had read Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea as a young girl. Now, as an adult, I have been rereading some of my all-time favorite stories. I have to say that this collection is at the top of my list. The quality of the writing is not found in many modern books. Lucy Maud Montgomery created characters that we care about, in adventures that touch us, heart and soul. The orphan, Anne Shirley, sees life in such a positive way, with so much 'scope for imagination'. Through the ups and downs, the humor and the heartaches, we fall in love with the characters in this series. Even though some of the books were written one hundred years ago, the dreams and insecurities that Anne has are just as relevant today. This collection is an excellent way to enjoy the complete set at a good value. These stories are not JUST for young girls. I would recommend The Complete Anne of Green Gables Boxed Set to anyone who loves good storytelling, anyone who knows what it's like to be a 'kindered spirit'. After reading the books, I would also recommend the Emmy Award-winning Anne of Green Gables that was shown on PBS. It stars Megan Follows as Anne and Colleen Dewhurst as Marilla. This is the best adaptation of the books that I have seen. There are a few others out there but, in this, Megan Follows captures the "book Anne" perfectly. The collection, presented by Sullivan Entertainment, is available on DVD and includes Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Green Gables-The Sequel, and Anne of Green Gables-The Continuing Story. I don't usually recommend the video/movie version of a book, and this shouldn't be a substitute for the wonderful reading, but Megan Follows did such a good job as Anne that I had to mention it.
Sharing the Fun of Reading August 14, 2010 Judi I read these books as a child and purchased this set to share with my grand children. I don't know if these books are a hit yet because my two older ones (ages 11 and 10) have been reading the Vampire books that are so popular. My 7 year old hasn't tried them yet. However, my 21 year old grand daughter loves them just like I do. Time will tell about the younger ones.
Great way to provide books - environmentally friendly August 6, 2010 Kat The set of books makes easily available classics for children. Reading is so important and a knowledge of the genre provides a background for continuing the culture and history - i.e., an educated person.
Well now, these are good stories July 23, 2010 Mark Wilsonwood (Grapevine, TX) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Why would I -- a 54-year old American male -- read, much less enjoy, these stories about a Canadian orphan girl of more than 100 years ago? Well now (as Matthew Cuthbert started most of his sentences; I feel I'm a kindred spirit with Matthew, being Presbyterian and voting conservative and being smitten with Anne Shirley), a good story is a good story. Just because most people would consider the main audience for the books to be juvenile females doesn't mean I can't enjoy them.
These books are escapism for me. Isn't it true that escapism can be bad (destructive behavior, permanent avoidance of reality) or good (refreshing of the spirit by temporary removal from real life)? I think these stories are the good kind of escapism. I can open one of them, and in seconds find myself in the peaceful environs of the north shore of Prince Edward Island, among good and kind people.
Miss Josephine Barry was amused by, and enjoyed spending time with, that "Anne-girl". Same here.
good books...bad box July 22, 2010 M. Heidenreich I love the Anne of Green Gables book series and I was looking forward to having my own box set of the books but when I recieved the books I was dissapointed with the box which held the books. Unlike the traditional card board boxes, this was very flimsey and would fall apart very easily.
