Product Description #1 New York Times bestselling author Nelson DeMille delivers the long-awaited follow-up to his classic novel The Gold Coast.
When John Sutter's aristocratic wife killed her mafia don lover, John left America and set out in his sailboat on a three-year journey around the world, eventually settling in London. Now, ten years later, he has come home to the Gold Coast, that stretch of land on the North Shore of Long Island that once held the greatest concentration of wealth and power in America, to attend the imminent funeral of an old family servant. Taking up temporary residence in the gatehouse of Stanhope Hall, John finds himself living only a quarter of a mile from Susan who has also returned to Long Island. But Susan isn't the only person from John's past who has reemerged: Though Frank Bellarosa, infamous Mafia don and Susan's ex-lover, is long dead, his son, Anthony, is alive and well, and intent on two missions: Drawing John back into the violent world of the Bellarosa family, and exacting revenge on his father's murderer--Susan Sutter. At the same time, John and Susan's mutual attraction resurfaces and old passions begin to reignite, and John finds himself pulled deeper into a familiar web of seduction and betrayal. In THE GATE HOUSE, acclaimed author Nelson Demille brings us back to that fabled spot on the North Shore -- a place where past, present, and future collides with often unexpected results.

Laughed out Loud! August 30, 2010 Barbara F. Foster (Tallahassee, FL, US) DeMille was spot on for the genre. And, his tongue-in-cheek humor was hilarious. Looking forward to his next novel.
I disagree with many reviewers here - this is a very good book August 26, 2010 M. MESSINA (Brooklyn, NY) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Having read so many negative customer reviews of The Gate House, and considering that its precursor, The Gold Coast, is among my favorite books and is my single favorite DeMille book, I approached The Gate House with some apprehension; I feared I'd be disappointed, but having enjoyed the story and characters of The Gold Coast so much, I knew I had to give the sequel a chance.
And far from being disappointed, I found I was delighted.
Yes, perhaps there is not much in the way of "action" compared to Gold Coast - and certainly not compared to the typical DeMille thriller, which neither Gold Coast or Gate House is - and so I agree that nothing much "happens" for the long middle section of the book. But "story," I suspect, may not have been DeMille's primary reason for writing this book; instead, this strikes me as the memoir of a more mature, introspective individual, taking careful stock of his values, emotional connections, and priorities: that's who the protagonist, John Sutter, has grown to be after the events of the first book ten years earlier - while still retaining his incisive wit. So this is a "serious" book about a couple in late middle age, exploring what it means to be truly and irrevocably committed to a partner - but it's also funny as hell: I found myself laughing out loud, a LOT. Amidst the usual (and very entertaining) DeMille sarcasm, is the author's surprisingly serious exploration of aging, mature love, loyalty, relationships - and it all works very well.
I admit I may have been more prepared to enjoy this book more than some other readers did because I truly like and enjoy the characters. Unlike some, I don't find the Sutters at all unsympathetic: yes, they exhibit the rather cool, haughty demeanor of their upper-crust culture, but I never doubted John and Susan's love for one another and for their children, and their determination to make a new life together (ok, so a convenient deus ex machina appeared late in the story to help bring that about, but I can accept that).
One star off for a bit too much repetition of events of the first book, and for one rather cardboard character, Anthony Bellarosa (but even he had his entertaining moments), but four solid stars for everything else.
I actually found myself very moved by the ending. I would even heartily welcome a third Sutter story, should DeMille find one to write.
If you've read and enjoyed The Gold Coast - you really should read that one first - I would recommend The Gate House without reservation.

I think I have read all of DeMille's books and this has got to be one of the best.
