Product Description
Dorothea Benton Frank returns to the enchanted landscape of South Carolina's Lowcountry made famous in her beloved New York Times bestseller Sullivans Island to tell the story of the next generation of Hamiltons and Hayes. Return to Sullivans Island Whether you were away from the Lowcountry for a week or for years, it was impossible to remember how gorgeous it was. It never changed and everyone depended on that. Newly graduated from college and an aspiring writer, Beth Hayes craves independence and has a world to conquer. But her notions of travel, graduate study, and writing the great American novel will have to be postponed. With her mother, Susan, leaving to fulfill her own dreams in Paris and her Aunt Maggie, Uncle Grant, and stepfather, Simon, moving to California, Beth is elected by her elders to house-sit the Island Gamble. Surrounded by the shimmering blue waters of the Atlantic, the white clapboards, silver tin roof, and confessional porch have seen and heard the stories of generations of Hamiltons. But will the ghosts of the Island Gamble be watching over Beth? Buoyed by sentimental memories of growing up on this tiny sandbar that seems to be untouched by time, Beth vows to give herself over to the Lowcountry force and discover the wisdom it holds. She will rest, rejuvenate, and then reenter the outside world. Just as she vows she will never give into the delusional world of white picket fences, minivans, and eternal love, she meets Max Mitchell. And all her convictions and plans begin to unravel with lightning speed. There is so much about life and her family's past that she does not know. Her ignorance and naivetÉ nearly cost her both her inheritance and her family's respect. But Beth finds unexpected friends to help her through the disaster she faces: her wise and charming Aunt Sophie; Cecily Singleton, the granddaughter of Livvie Singleton; and Woody Morrison, the solid young investment banker. This wonderful ensemble of characters could be your own family, but watch what unfolds as they succumb to the island's spell. If everything happens for a reason, then Beth's return to Sullivans Island teaches her that betrayal and tragedy are most easily handled when you surround yourself with loyal family and friends in a magical place that loves you so much that it wants to claim you as its own.

Sleepy Southern - But Not In A Good Way August 13, 2010 Elaine (Sacramento, CA United States) Girl graduates from college and agrees to housesit her childhood home while everyone else goes off on an adventure somewhere. Ghosts talk to her from the bedroom mirror and thrown things around the room. She gets two jobs in less than a week. She falls for an absolute ass, and blows off the really smart cute, cool guy. And goes behind her mother's back to raid her trust account for a bad investment with previously mentioned ass. Seriously? She also showed up in town with an embarrassing shade of red hair, which she corrected quickly, so maybe it started out as a latter-day episode of I Love Lucy...
I LOVE southern writing, but I'm starting to wonder why I even finished this...
Enjoyed it. August 11, 2010 GlendaK Wow, after seeing so many bad reviews on this book I can't wait to read more of DBF's novels as the other books that she's written have received better reviews. I personally loved "Return to Sullivan's Island, and enjoyed reading it this summer. This was my first book to read of the novalist, and I feel that she did a good job with the main character. Beth made some bad judgements, but hey, that's life for all of us at some point. Will not say anything more so as to not spoil the book for anyone who hasn't read it, but I really did like the book and hated that it had to end.
Truly terrible... August 7, 2010 Virginia R. Hudson (Rhode Island) I've read Frank's other books and enjoyed them. But Return to Sulivans Island was poorly written. The main character, Beth, recently graduated from college, seemed more like a 13 or 14 year old in her actions and inner monlogues. (I estimate that these driveling monologues take about a quarter of the book & I had to skip over them because they were so irritating.) Could a woman that age really be so childish?
Beth is beyond naive; she foolish, juvenile and engages in sentimental babbling that was downright sad. Frank created a pathetic character who you would rather not know.
The book seems like someone else wrote it. Where were her editors - to let this get to print?
The dialogue was downright silly, most of the characters were not likable, the story line dragged on & on, and the ending was very disappointing. Instead of giving this to the "Book Drop" I will put it in the recycle bin. I won't read her future books. That's how bad this one was. Sorry to say.
better than expected August 4, 2010 good book but a little too predictable and some parts seem to drag on forever. found myself struggling to stay interested unlike franks other books.
Boring! August 4, 2010 Talie Like so many others, I really wanted to like this one and so I gave it the good old college try. However, I ended up being greatly disappointed. DBF's descriptive skills are excellent, but I would have preferred less description of what the stupid cupboards looked like and more actual storytelling. The characters were ambiguous and flat, the dialogue was inane, and the story moved at a snail's pace.
I give this book one star because it was good for one thing: curing insomnia!
